Valkyria Chronicles… Valkyria…Chronicles… You remember Valkyria Chronicles, right? If you’re answer was “no” then you clearly don’t know good video games. In all seriousness, though, Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best RPGs on the PS3. While its sequel was only released on the PlayStation Portable, and probably reached a smaller audience by proxy, it too was a phenomenal roleplaying game. Therefore, when the hopes and dreams of VC enthusiasts were shattered by Sega’s announcement that the franchise’s third installment would not see the light of day in North America, fans turned to making a translation on their own to satiate their Valkyria appetite.
In development since February 2012, this two-year translation endeavor is finally available to folks with a copy of the Japanese PSP game. The patch can be downloaded from the project’s website, which just requires a quick install and a custom firmware, and viola — all the Japanese text in the game is instantly turned into English! It should be made clear: to our knowledge, the patch is only compatible with the Valkyria Chronicles 3: Extra Edition version of the title. So, if you’re looking to get in on this, make sure that’s the iteration of the game you own/purchase.
Of note are a few things: the translators have stated that the text used during the tutorial segment has a formatting problems, in addition to some occasional instances of text spilling over dialogue boxes later in the game. Naturally, the team is working to address both of these issues.
Valkyria Chronicles 3 is a side story in the series, and takes place during the time of the original title. For those who were turned off by the first two Valkyria Chronicles’ bright colors and seemingly light-hearted tone (although the games are anything but light-hearted), they may be excited to hear that VC3 emphasizes darker, more mature themes than its predecessors.
