Matsuno’s Job on Unsung Story Isn’t Gameplay

The Kickstarter for Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians launched today, and it’s possible it may be an excellent strategy/RPG.  The concept art looks nice, at the very least, but the main draw is in the intro line-

A rich, diverse Tactical RPG, envisioned by the master of the genre Yasumi Matsuno, Playdek, and you, the fans!

Yatsumi Matsuno?  Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, FFXII Matsuno?  Yes, yes, and yes again.  Other lines from the campaign include “Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians is the spiritual successor in a storied line of epic tactical RPGs designed by Yasumi Matsuno.”, and “In the hands of the veteran tactical RPG master himself, Unsung Story will re-imagine a classic game genre, as Yasumi Matsuno weaves together one of the complex and rich game worlds that he is known for, with inspiring class based tactics game play.”  This game can have all my moneys!

And then a closer look reveals a few problems.  The way Matsuno’s name doesn’t have a title beside it in the credits, for example, or how he’s referred to as a Creative Director in the video.  Every mention of Mastuno’s name is coupled with a reference to his previous works, but doesn’t specify what he’s doing in Unsung Story specifically.  As it turns out, according to Yasumi Matsuno himself, what he’s done is this

Which roughly translates to the original design plan, story, and setting.  The actual gameplay and anything associated with it is in the hands of Playdek.

Unsung Story may be a great strategy/RPG.  It could be amazing.  The concept art is certainly pretty, at the very least.  Just be aware if you decide to throw your money at it that what you’re getting is a game by Playdek with world and story by Matsuno.  His involvement in the project seems to be effectively complete at this point, as opposed to all the other games he’s known for that he designed from start to finish.
