’90s Arcade Racer Wii U Development Updated

The ’90s Arcade Racer Kickstarter pitch was a must-back for fans of the Daytona USA games. While the original has been out on PSN and XBLA for a while, fans still want a game like it that carries on that spirit since it’s an IP Sega has been iffy with supporting in the past. The devs haven’t posted many updates about the game, but did share some new information in a recent blog post. The game isn’t just coming to Wii U, but is shown actually running on the GamePad – and looking stunning on it.

It’s set to run at 60 FPS at 720p resolution, and they seem to be on their way to having 30 cars in every race. There’s no firm release date, but they are aiming for the middle of 2014. They want to make a love-letter to ’90s racers, and seem to have evoked Daytona just enough to make it feel like a successor to the throne while still putting a unique spin on it as well. Anyone who grew up with Daytona as an arcade staple should be excited about this. While it’s doubtful the game will turn the Wii U’s ship around, one never knows what will catch on, and perhaps filling a void on that platform will allow it to achieve quick success on consoles.
