The NPD Group has released the sales results for June 2014. As we reported earlier, despite a price drop the Xbox One was unable to unseat the PS4 as the best-selling console of June 2014. Hardware sales are up 100% compared to June 2013 and overall, the industry has increased by 24%, a sign that the new consoles are injecting much needed life into the industry.
A lot of this had to do with the games. While there were very few significant releases last month, many games from May continued to sell very well. Watch Dogs remained at the top with Mario Kart 8 in second:
- Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)
- Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo)
- Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition/Xbox 360 Edition (Sony/Microsoft)
- EA Sports UFC (EA)
- FIFA 14 (EA)
- NBA 2K14 (2K Games)
- Wolfenstein: The New Order (Bethesda Softworks)
- Call of Duty: Ghosts (Activision)
- Tomodachi Life (Nintendo)
- Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
Nintendo released a statement revealing that Wii U sales were up 233% compared to June 2013, though they did not release official numbers. This shot in the arm can be attributed to Mario Kart 8, which continues to sell hardware. Software sales for Wii U are up 373% with Mario Kart 8 selling 470,000 units, giving it a lifetime figure in the US at 885,000.
Microsoft has already released a statement concerning their NPD numbers. Though they did not release any sales information, they did note that Xbox One sales were double what they sold in May. Sony has yet to release a statement.
