Tom Chilton, game director for World of Warcraft, in response to query about a potential sequel to the MMO juggernaut, made a pretty surprising response at Gamescom 2014:
“Definitely. It’s something we have talked about. It’s something we have talked about for ten years. I think that there are a lot of challenges there in seeing how World of Warcraft II relates to World of Warcraft, do they live alongside each other, does one feed into the other, what is that product, etc. These are challenges that have to be figured out before that becomes a reality.”
Since the MMO’s heyday in the late 2000’s, World of Warcraft has lost a large number of subscribers and earned middling reception to recent expansions. Blizzard has also been reported to be working on the Titan multiplayer game, but has restructured development on the game, leaving an unknown development schedule in their wake. Could World of Warcraft II be the one to fill that gap and breathe new life into the franchise? At this point, the possibility is not out the window at all.
