Mario Balotelli Facing FA Investigation After Posting Racist Mario Meme

It seems professional soccer player Mario Balotelli is back to his usual antics today with a particularly ill-advised Instagram post starring Nintendo’s own plucky plumber, Mario. The Liverpool player posted a meme urging people not to be racist, explaining that Mario is “an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English, and looks like a Mexican…jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew.”

The post was quickly deleted, but not before the internet caught hold of it and scolded Balotelli for his hypocritical and childish behavior. The Italian star responded to those labeling him as anti-Semitic by tweeting the following:

Balotelli has since posted a full apology:

I apologize if I’ve offended anyone. The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context may have the opposite effect. Not all Mexicans have moustache, not all black people jump high and not all Jewish people love money. I used a cartoon done by someone else because it has Super Mario and I though it was funny and not offensive. Again, I’m sorry.

The Football Association is investigating the situation, and will likely fine or ban the player.
