Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Comes West This Summer

If you’re a colossal weeaboo like myself, few games on the horizon are quite as exciting as Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax. This 2D fighting game mixes a ton of characters from Japan’s most prominent Light Novel imprint in a crossover brawl that’s just as exciting as Smash Bros. for people who really wish they had little sisters to sleep with. Also Virtua Fighter’s Akira Yuki and Valkyria Chronicles’ Selvaria Bles make a playable appearance, if you’re into titles of normal length with no exclamation marks. With all of these licenses to manage, it seemed doubtful that the game would ever make it to western shores, but according to Sega and Sony we’ll have it in our PS3s and Vitas by the end of summer. That’s cause for celebration in my book. Check out the announcement trailer below.

The roster is far from perfect. Kino of Kino’s Journey and Holo of Spice and Wolf ought to be playable fighters, while Oreimo’s Kirino and Tomoka of Ro Kyu Bu (more commonly known as Loliball) make far more sense as support characters. Nothing from Black Bullet has any place in any game, while The Devil is a Part Timer! has several characters who would make fantastic fighters. There’s far too much from Reki Kawahara (Accel World, *shudder* Sword Art Online) and far too little from Ryogho Narita (Baccano!, Durarara!!), but I suppose it does make more sense for the game to lead with Dengeki Bunko’s more currently popular franchises. Besides, I will be able to wail on all those terrible characters with Aisaka Taiga of Toradora! fame, so I can’t complain too much.
