Captain Toad amiibo Support Demonstrated in New Video

If you don’t have a place in your heart reserved for Captain Toad, you probably don’t have a heart to begin with. The headlamp-wearing hero’s solo title, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, was a hit here at Hardcore Gamer when it launched last December, and soon players will be able to enjoy the Wii U game’s unique amiibo support. Revealed in Nintendo’s January Nintendo Direct, players who scan in the soon-to-be-released Toad amiibo will have a pixelated Toad to hidden in each level, adding a hide-and-seek spin on the game’s already puzzling gameplay.

A patch adding that amiibo functionality is expected for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker near the release of the Super Mario amiibo line later this month, but a new video released today demonstrates just how it will all work. It appears that once the 8-bit Toad is in view, a timer will begin counting down. If the pixelated character is still on screen when the timer hits zero, the player wins. It’s a simple design, but it remains to be seen just how challenging the placement of the hidden Toads will be.

Interestingly, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will also be bundled with the Toad amiibo in Japan, much like Mario party 10 and the the new Mario amiibo will be sold together in the west. Nintendo has yet to announce a similar bundle for North America or Europe, but don’t rule it out just yet.
