The 6 Coolest Parts of Just Cause 3’s New Trailer

Just Cause 3 finally got its first real gameplay trailer, and oh man does it look incredible. Cars blowing up, statues getting knocked down, planes, trains and helicopters, oh my! As a huge fan of Just Cause 2, I can’t even tell you how excited that trailer made me, but I can point out the six coolest parts from it.

1. It looks as stupid as ever.

I spent a lot of time in Just Cause 2 trying to pull off the weirdest, dumbest stunts I could. I even tried to recreate that initial plane hijack scene from The Dark Knight Returns in the game — and got dangerously close, too. So seeing a bus tethered to a helicopter crashing through a statue and then through a line of cars is an incredibly reassuring sight. No game encourages quite the same brand of stupid creativity that Just Cause 2 did, so it’s super great to see that Just Cause 3 is looking to recreate the magic and stoke players’ imaginations.

2. You can hang upside from helicopters.

In Just Cause 2, you could hang underneath helicopters with your grappling hook and shoot your weapon with your other arm, and hey, that was pretty awesome already, but now you can straight-up just plant your feet on the bottom of a helicopter and just kinda hang out there. As it turns out, that’s way cooler.

3. You can backflip off cars.

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 1.26.02 PMOK, so, grain of salt on this one because maybe it was just part of a cut scene or something, but at one point in the trailer, Rico is driving a car off a bridge and backflips off of it in a move worthy of a Fast & Furious movie. It didn’t particularly look like a scripted sequence though, so I’m willing to bet this is just how Rico bails off of cars from stunt position now, and that’s just great. That’s gonna be a fun move to play around with.

4. The destruction looks way better.

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 1.26.20 PMEverything in Just Cause 2 blew up in a really fun, bombastic way, but still, it all just kinda blew up, you know? Some structures would crumble or topple in decently realistic ways, but nothing on a Just Cause 3 level. A bus gets pulled through a statue and the chunks all fly off in the same direction. The plane you see above crashes through a tall metal tower that bends with it until it finally tears apart. It all looks fantastic, and it’s sure to make the destruction in that game feel even better.

5. Finally, a wingsuit!

Oh yeah. Here we go. One of the best parts of Just Cause 2 was that Rico has infinite parachutes — you want to bail out of that plane, drive a motorcycle off a mountain, shoot a propane tank then grapple to it as it rockets upward and explodes, throwing you off? Sure! Why not? You’ve got infinite parachutes, so go right ahead! The only problem with that was that parachutes are slow for traveling long distances, at least until you’re closer to ground level and can use the grappling hook to propel you forward. But now you can just deploy the wingsuit and soar forward that way. Both for dreaming up silly stunts and for just getting around the world in general, that’s a huge improvement.

6. It looks stupider than ever.

This is easily the coolest shot of the trailer for me — a car tethered to another car tethered to a helicopter. That’s a full 100% increase in the number of cars you can tether to a helicopter. That’s insane on its own, but it’s  insane that they found ways to make the player’s arsenal that much better to allow for even crazier stunts. This trailer shows off everything I’d want in a Just Cause 2 sequel: Just Cause 2, but more — more tools to play with, more destruction, more everything. A lot of trailers these days are too good to be true, but everything shown in the Just Cause 3 trailer looks totally achievable and in-line with the previous game and the studio’s track record. I’m pumped.
