Final Fantasy Adventure Remake Coming to the West

Final Fantasy Adventure, also known as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, was released for the Gameboy way back in 1991. It launched to only a smattering of applause, even in spite of the name change for western audiences. Just the same, here we are, over two decades later, and the game is hopping on the remake bandwagon…again. That’s right, for those who remember, the game already got a remake back in 2003 with the GBA’s Sword of Mana (which was a fantastic game, and perhaps the system’s most aesthetically beautiful game). But even with that remake just 12 years ago, we’re getting another one re-dubbed Adventures of Mana. This one is a 3D take on the original game and is set to release on iOS, Android, and Vita…in Japan. While Square Enix announced today that the game would be coming to the States, unfortunately we’ll only be getting the iOS and Android versions of the game. Let your collective groans commence in 3, 2, 1…

The game is slated for a launch sometime this winter in Japan, while a North American date has yet to be cemented. While you wait for it, though, go ahead and check out the game’s trailer and decide for yourself if you’ll be setting aside time for it. The music is gorgeous — that much can’t be denied. We don’t want to judge the game before it’s even out, but it’s hard to deny that, especially in comparison to the 2003 game, the game just seems a little hollow and lacking personality. Here’s hoping we’re wrong.
