Dave Mirra of ‘Freestyle BMX’ Fame Dead at 41

Dave Mirra was found dead yesterday evening in Greenville, NC reports the Greenville Police Department. Upon arriving, officers found Mirra sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area before the time of his death.

He was 41.

Mirra was best known to gamers as the namesake and face of Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, with along with its sequel, garnered praise and high sales during the early aughts. Coming at a time when extreme sports were all the rage, the series was seen as the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” of the BMX world, but was not continued after its 2001 sequel.

Mirra did not leave the video game world, however, and appeared in Colin McRae: Dirt 2.

A champion of BMX at the X Games for most the 90s and aughts, Mirra then turned his focus to rallying and at the time of his death was pursuing triathlons and Ironman competitions.
