Miitomo, Nintendo’s first official mobile app, launched in Japan yesterday, ushering in a new age of Nintendo games. The “free-to-start” app emphasizes social interaction and allows players to earn points for the brand new MyNintendo rewards site, which launched alongside Miitomo and functions much like Club Nintendo did before it was shuttered last year. Players design and outfit a unique Mii character, an avatar system Nintendo first debuted on the Wii, and interact and communicate with other players.
Miitomo is the first product of Nintendo and DeNA’s high profile partnership, and will be followed by four other games before the end of 2017.
Miitomo is expected to release in other territories by the end of the month.
