When one asks what Nippon Ichi Software’s upcoming game, Cladun Returns, happens to be, it’s obvious that the inquirer did not read the full title, which ends with This Is Sengoku! That doesn’t really resolve the initial query, though, so publisher NIS America has released an introductory trailer. It turns out that Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku! will be equal parts action/RPG and rogue-like, with elements of pixel editing to allow for personalization. Featuring extremely long dungeons, numerous character classes, and all sorts of weapon styles to try out, there seems to be more depth lying under the skin of this retro styled title that initially meets the eye.
Set, naturally, in a take on Japan’s Sengoku era, the game will center around the land of Arcanus Cella, where souls gather to await reincarnation. The task presented to the player is to assist these souls with resolving unfinished business, which appears to take the form of smacking the ever loving crud out of random monsters and beasts in the dungeons, all while leveling up and customizing a hero.
It’s kind of odd. I hold the opinion that I am growing weary of these retro styled titles, but really interesting ones keep appearing to make me rethink that position. Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku! happens to be one of those, with its offer of seemingly infinite variety and various gameplay styles on offer. Fortunately, this one will be hitting PlayStation 4 and Vita on June 9 with the Steam version hitting a little earlier on June 6.
