Overwatch Addresses its Lootbox Problem

Overwatch is in full swing for it’s one year anniversary, unfortunately this brings up old qualms that span said year. The Overwatch community has been making noise again and asking for a response in addressing their concerns with the reward system/loot boxes. Their voices have been heard with an official statement coming from Game Director, Jeff Kaplan.

I just wanted to acknowledge that we’ve been following the threads about the loot box rewards as they pertain to the anniversary events, other events and loot boxes in general. The feedback and suggestions have been helpful to us. We had a really great discussion yesterday about the feedback we’ve been hearing this week. While I don’t have any immediate action items to report, I thought it was important for you to know that we are listening.

The statement rings true with sentiment, and while it doesn’t address the concerns immediately, it is reassuring to see a response. Only time will tell if Blizzard takes a step in the direction fans are hoping for. I know I wouldn’t mind purchasing out right the skins I wanted for a flat fee.

The main issue around the loot box system specifically is drop rates and repeat cosmetics. At the moment, anything that is a repeat of something one already has only gets a 1/5 return when traded in, it’s easy to see why the community is frustrated. It also doesn’t help that events are timed and finding the time, unless strictly dedicated to Overwatch, just won’t happen for most. This ensures people keep buying loot boxes to get the loot they want, hopefully.

The Overwatch Anniversery event will last until June 12, and the rewards are hot. Some seriously great goodies, it’s just a shame it has to be so short lived.
