So remember in our recent preview of Sonic Mania, when we said it was looking like the game wouldn’t have a versus mode similar to that in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3? Well, it feels like the developers may have taken that as a challenge, because lo and behold, out of the blue comes a new two-player split-screen Competition Mode, which you can get your first glimpse of in the video below (complete with Sonic 2’s scrunched-up graphics). Playing as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, you’ll compete to see who can do their best in simultaneously making it through a level.
Unlike the split-screen modes in the original games, though, the Competition Mode here isn’t a mere race. Instead, the winner is determined by such factors the time taken, the numbers of rings collected, the number of items collected, and the player’s score. The end result looks to be an an even more enjoyable version of the classic couch-based battles, and we’ll see if that is indeed the case when Sonic Mania comes out on August 15 for all major home consoles and PC.
