Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has formed a new studio to develop games based on the Harry Potter IP.
Harry Potter is one of Warner Bros. most valuable IPs, but the company has done little with it in the videogame space. All eight movie-tie-in games were developed and published by EA. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s only releases have been LEGO Harry Potter games. Well, that is all going to end.
Portkey Games is a new development studio formed to develop mobile and console games set in the Harry Potter universe. The games will feature both new and familiar characters, new locations, and new story elements. The studio got it’s name from the Portkey, a magical item from the Harry Potter universe capable of magically transporting a person from point A to point B. They ending up going with this because it’s their goal to transport players into the world of Harry Potter.
‘With Portkey Games, we are thrilled to answer the fans’ requests for more games inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, said David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We are working with talented creators to build games that focus on player-generated stories, which will live alongside the magical universe created by J.K. Rowling.’
At this time, Portkey Games isn’t ready to announce any games. However, the studio did hint that some form of announcement could arrive very soon. Portkey Games is part of a growing effort by Warner Bros. to expand the Harry Potter franchise beyond the original eight films. The film studio already has five films planned for their Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, which launched it’s first film a year ago.
