This zombie and survival spin on the Metal Gear IP isn’t really something everyone was clamoring for. That said, it could be worth a chance. Dead Rising fans may notice a few things seem a bit familiar about this non-Kojima addition to the stealth-action franchise. In Metal Gear Survive, much of the objective-based stealth of old, Metal Gear Solid games, isn’t really the point here. Instead, there is a fierce and surprising amount of thought put into how existing assets and mechanics from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain can be repurposed for a sort of sci-fi zombie survival type of game.
For Metal Gear Soliv V veterans, Survive can come off a bit familiar and very, very different. Fortunately, that seems to be what the team is going for with this one — a game that is Metal Gear in smaller doses and zombie survival in far more doses. Likewise, it’ll be an interesting playground to go through, with various bombastic tools to engage the game’s particular type of undead with. Metal Gears themselves also seem to be making an appearance. As with wacky games, it’s often even better to be able to do it all with friends and Metal Gear Survive is offering that prominently. With the co-op and an open beta running now, it looks perfectly safe to give this new, odd cousin to Metal Gear a shot.
