Fire is one of those tricky things. Too big and it easily gets out of control, but it’s so handy to have around that the risk is almost always worth it. Keep the fire small enough and it becomes a useful tool, such as when it’s the single flame of a candle shedding light into the darkness. The novice shaman Teku’s left hand is a candle, and it’s just the tool he needs to survive the puzzles and challenges involved in saving his mentor from the tribe that kidnapped him. Candle: The Power of the Flame is a beautiful hand-painted platforming adventure through an odd and rustic fantasy world, and death comes easily if you don’t pay attention. Teku’s candle may have the power of flame within it but it’s still a tiny thing, and it’s not going to protect him from giant rocks, deep spiky pits, or even hungry critters during the times it’s not lit. Staying observant is a major part of survival, but checkpoints go a long way towards forgiving the occasional screw-up as well.
Candle: The Power of the Flame is getting a physical printing from Signature Edition Games in both standard and boxed editions, Switch and PS4. The regular version is available in all the usual ways (in Europe), but the Signature Edition can only be ordered through the web site. The box will be packed with a nice amount of goodies, with the usual CD soundtrack and art book being joined by a cute enamel pin plus three paper marionettes you can assemble. It’s a nice little package for a truly gorgeous game, and reservations even get the standard collector’s coin as well.
Candle: The Power of the Flame is available for pre-order now.
