Super Crown Confirmed Only for Toadette, Luigi Apparently Disappointed

When Nintendo announced New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the internet gaming community quickly took one seemingly insignificant detail and turned it into one of 2018’s oddest memes. For the most part, the game is an enhanced port of New Super Mario Bros. U, a by-the-numbers Mario adventure-platformer. The original was certainly a fun game, but not something to get overly excited for. However, this version’s inclusion of Toadette and a brand new “Super Crown” item caught just about everyone’s attention.

For those unaware, Toadette can use the Super Crown to turn into “Peachette,” a character that looks just like Princess Peach. For some, this opened up a whole wealth of possibilities concerned with Mushroom Kingdom lore. Others were more interested in the item’s transformative powers though. Nintendo never explicitly said that the Super Crown was only for Toadette, so of course that meant any character could use it. One thing led to another, and “Bowsette,” a fusion of Peach and Bowser, was born. It was a weird, funny and at times uncomfortable meme, so it of course had to die sooner or later.

New Super Mario Bros U - Super Crown Only Toadette

Well, that time has finally come. The Super Crown’s listing on theĀ New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe website confirms beyond all doubt that no character besides Toadette can use the Super Crown, not Bowser and especially not Luigi. This doesn’t do anything to curb the conspiracy theories the item gave rise to, but there will at least be no Peach-like Luigis running around. It’s not clear why Luigi in particular would be broken up about this development, but it’s probably better not to ask.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe launches for Nintendo Switch on January 11.
