Developer Monothetic first released their roguelike shooter Beacon through itch.io in an early state back in 2018. Since then, they’ve been making various tweaks, preparing for the day when it can be released on a grander scale. And today would be that day, as Beacon is now available to purchase in Early Access. Accompanying this major development is a new trailer for the game, which you can naturally check out below.
Playing as space privateer Freja Akiyama, the goal is to hunt for the titular distress beacon after crash landing on an alien planet. Well, to be more accurate, you’ll be playing as one of Freja’s clones. See, the gimmick behind the game is that each time you die (and considering the genre and the hostile wildlife, you will indeed die), you use DNA collected to alter future clones. So with each altered genome, each clone gains new abilities for your next run. This also alters your appearance, as the video below shows. As seen by the end, this can lead to some rather…interesting results. Of course, it also appears to lead to fast-paced, action-packed gameplay as well. Beacon is available in Early Access right now on both Steam and itch.io, and we’ll have a preview soon letting you know how this gene-splicing shooter is shaping up, so stay tuned.
