Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers Makes Big Changes, Benchmark Released

While we’ll have more to say on the subject in the near future, Square Enix dropped a bomb with their fifty-first Live Letter earlier today. After some technical issues, Naoki Yoshida and party detailed a huge array of changes coming to Final Fantasy XIV late next month/early July when Shadowbringers hits. Here are just a couple of main points that were highlighted:

  • Tanks have been reworked so each job is viable in any situation
    • Offensive stances have been removed
    • Enmity generation is increased by all tank attacks
    • Emphasis on generating damage
  • Healers will receive different unique abilities to differentiate themselves even more
    • Protect will be removed
  • DPS classes are receiving some undefined changes, although Machinist looks to be getting the most significant of reworks

  • Specific skills can be charged multiple times to be use consecutively
  • The ability to interrupting an attack is show on the enemy’s health bar
  • Role Actions have been reworked to be automatic and have been reduced to the essentials
  • MP is now capped at 10,000
  • Piety now factors into how fast MP recharges in battle
  • Main Attribute Materia no longer will work
  • Pets will be invulnerable (tank pets will be revised)
  • Pet actions will be assigned on your bar and no longer their own
  • Chain bonuses will be removed from dungeons
  • Damage limit has been increased from 999,999 to 9,999,999
  • Barrier will be now visible on a player’s health bar
  • Other adjustments to damage and limit break

  • Fates will drop unique currencies that can be exchanged at a specific vendor
  • Side quests in the new regions will be level synced to your level and will be scaled
  • Role quests for Physical DPS/Magical DPS/Tank/Healer will be added and will be essential to completing the campaign
  • Five new quests for Disciples of Hand and Disciples of Land
  • A Light Skin for the UI
  • Cross-world Linkshells will be expanded to 8-channels
  • Enemy data now shows into the decimals

Whew. That is a lot of information to come out of this live letter, and considering they haven’t really talked about the Ishgard restructuring or the crafting/gathering specifics, there should be more to come as their next stream is scheduled for just after E3.

Finally, PC players are able to download the Shadowbringers benchmark right now which should give them a taste of the Viera and Ronso Hrothgar races (not to mention to see how well your computer can run the expansion).

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is available July 2 for PlayStation 4 and PC, with those who pre-order gaining early access which starts June 28.
