Death Stranding’s Official Box Art Marks The Return of ‘A Hideo Kojima Game’

Hideo Kojima’s famous ‘A Hideo Kojima Game’ will be making its return on the official box art for the highly anticipated Death Stranding.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con featuring Geoff Keighley and Nicolas Winding Refn, the legendary Japanese developer revealed the final key art that will serve as the cover for his upcoming title.

The cover features The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, who plays main protagonist Sam Porter Bridges in Death Stranding.

And the box art, which has a hoodless Sam on the steelbook version, features the return of ‘A Hideo Kojima Game.’

Kojima, 55, used the phrase consistently on the covers of the critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid franchise.

While 2014’s Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes featured it on the box art, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain did not include it on the cover amid a troubled relationship between the MGS creator and publisher Konami.

The Death Stranding director took to Twitter last month to explain the significance of ‘A Hideo Kojima Game,’ saying it was representative of his involvement in the project.

“33 years ago in [the] game[s] industry, the game dev team was formed of only 5-6 people,” Kojima explained.

“Creating the concept ideas, writing the story and specs, drawing the map on, the graph paper, helping dot draw, inputting the data directly, managing the flag, constructing simplified language by logic, compressing binary number image, conducting all the directions and even writing the manual script. And then I had to do business management, producing and promoting.

“Even when the team got bigger and the task was subdivided, my way of making [a] game didn’t change, an indies style. I get involved myself with the game creation from upstream to downstream. That’s A Hideo Kojima Game.

“I create the theme, the world atmosphere, the story, the character and the game design while making the concept, scheduling, gathering information, doing location scout, experimenting repeatedly, writing the script, deciding the specs, casting, sound designing, putting my ideas in daily basis and adjusting, solving problems editing trailers and even making the key art. That’s my task.”

Death Stranding, which was announced at E3 2016, will be Kojima’s first fully-fledged title since his departure from Konami in 2015.

The action title boasts an ensemble cast featuring Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker, Léa Seydoux, Tommie Earl Jenkins, Lindsay Wagner and Margaret Qualley.

Death Stranding will launch exclusively on PlayStation 4 on November 8.
