Team Rocket Blasts Off into Pokémon Go

Niantic today released a new update for Pokémon Go that brings the infamous Team Rocket into the game.

For the first time ever, Pokémon Go players can face off against one of the Pokémon series’ signature villain groups. Team Rocket, the villainous group that operates out of Kanto and Johto, finally joins the mobile title.

Players can face off against Rocket Grunts at Pokéstops, where they’ll battle using Shadow Pokémon. After winning, players have the opportunity to use a Premier Ball to capture the Shadow Pokémon and then purified using candy and dust. It is similar to the system first employed in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, which introduced the concept of Shadow Pokémon. The concept has not appeared in any of the mainline Pokémon titles.

Team Rocket is one of numerous villainous teams in the Pokémon universe, though it is unknown if others will make their way into Go. Go currently features Pokémon from up to Gen 4 so far. As such, Teams Magma, Aqua, and Galactic could potentially join the game. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Pokémon Go is available now as a free download on iOS and Android devices.
