The updated Switch model with a significant increase in battery life is available now.
Nintendo announced last month it would issue an update to the base Switch model. The new model would be completely identical to the 2017 launch model in all but one way, battery life. After a month of waiting, the new model is available for purchase at all major retailers.
Battery life in handheld and tabletop mode was a major criticism against the launch model. Clocking in at 2.5 to 6.5 hours, the Switch was a far cry from previous handhelds. The new model ups that battery life to 4.5 – 9 hours, a significant increase. According to Nintendo, players could only get about 3 hours of play time with a game like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. On the new model, however, players can expect around 5.5 hours before they need to plug in.
The new model comes packaged in a red box with either the Neon Blue/Red or Grey Joy-Cons. Retailers will continue to sell the original model in the white boxes. Unfortunately, it does not appear the older model is getting a discount. Both the updated and old models retail for $299.99.
Of course, this updated Switch model isn’t the only new hardware Nintendo is launching this fall. The Handheld-only Nintendo Switch Lite launches September 20 for $199.99.
