Since its launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been incredibly popular. It’s so popular in fact that its total lifetime sales now exceed 15 million in North America alone. Those sales aren’t tapering-off either; Switch sales are apparently up by 20 percent compared to 2018, and according to NPD Group, the platform has been the best-selling video game console for the past ten months straight.
Nintendo has also revealed that a total of fourteen games on the Switch have sold more than one million units each, and four of those have surpassed the six million mark. All four of the system’s most popular games are first party Nintendo titles of course, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate taking those top spots.
With stats like these, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo has been knocking it out of the park as both a developer and a platform-holder these past couple of years, and it looks like the trend will continue into 2020 with the likes of Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and (eventually) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 on the horizon. Indeed, it really is a great time to be a Nintendo fan!
