Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Trounces Current-Gen Call of Duty Release Records

Activision today announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has had the best opening for any Call of Duty title this-generation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has grossed more than $600 million worldwide in its first three days of release. This makes it the best-opening for a Call of Duty title during this console generation. In just a weekend, Modern Warfare became the top-selling release of 2019. Over on PS4, the game set new records for digital pre-orders and three-day digital sales on the platform. Meanwhile, Modern Warfare became the top-selling Call of Duty PC game ever.

“Call of Duty is once again the top selling new premium game of the year, proving the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports,” said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s Chief Executive Officer. “In its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a return to form for a franchise that many felt had lost its way. However, it came up short in a few categories. The launch still fell behind those of Black Ops II and Modern Warfare 3, which managed to gross $500 million and $400 million respectively on their first days. They had both easily eclipsed $600 million by the weekend’s end. Modern Warfare is also far from the largest entertainment launch of 2019. That honor goes to Avengers: Endgame, which gross $1.2 billion worldwide in its first weekend. Still, it’s an impressive start for the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
