Pokémon Sword and Shield Launch Event Cancelled

These haven’t exactly been good times, news-wise, for either launch events featuring major Switch games or Pokémon Sword and Shield. First the launch event for the Switch version of Overwatch in New York was cancelled amid controversy, and then Pokémon Sword and Shield was subject to major leaks, along with reports that morale at Game Freak has been at an all-time low. And now, a major launch event for Sword and Shield that was originally set to take place in Tokyo has now been cancelled. The official Pokémon site released the following statement concerning this sudden cancellation:

“Thank you for your continued patronage. The launch event for ‘Pocket Monster Sword Shield’, scheduled to be held at Sunshine City Fountain Square in Ikebukuro, Tokyo on November 15 (Friday), will be canceled due to operational reasons. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused to customers who were planning to visit or considering their visit.”

It’s currently unknown what these “operational reasons” are, though some have speculated that it may be due to negative fan reception, mainly revolving around the controversy concerning the removal of the National Pokédex, combined with reactions to the aforementioned leaks. Of course, it could just as easily be something completely unrelated. Regardless, we’ll still intrigued to see how Pokémon Sword and Shield holds up when it’s released on November 15.
