PlayStation, Discord Announce New Partnership

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Discord today announced a new partnership that will integrate Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network.

Discord, the popular communication service for gamers, is used by over 140 million people every month globally. It’s a popular place for PC gamers to gather. Now, that Discord magic is coming to PlayStation early next year in a yet unknown capacity.

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network,” said Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”

In addition to the partnership, Ryan also announced that Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment in Discord. This is particularly notable considering Microsoft attempted to buy Discord earlier this year. Those talks have since ended.

As exciting as this news is, we’ll have to wait and see just what this integration entails. Discord is currently integrated into Xbox, but that only allows Discord users to see what Xbox friends are playing. There’s currently no messaging and voice chat functionality.
