Gamescom 2021 Drops ‘Hybrid’ Approach, Retains Digital Format

This year’s Gamescom will follow on from last year’s format and continue to be a digital-only presentation, event organisers have today confirmed. Having previously announced that the event would take what was described as a “hybrid” approach — whereby physical attendance and online-only presentations would take place alongside — organisers state Gamescom has decided to take “take the safe option” and revert back to an exclusively-digital format for the second year running. The initial decision comes off the back of a slow-but-steady reopening of many of Europe’s retail and outdoor venues following the global Covid-19 pandemic.

An optimistic progression towards former normality that, further afield, has given confidence that similar events like EGX Rezzed in the UK, will also be able to go ahead physically this coming July. Gamescom 2021 will once more open up with Gamescom Opening Night Live, where there’s sure to be a fair few new and interesting announcements being readied, as there was last year. Gamescom 2021 officially kicks off August 25 and runs until August 27.
