E3 2019: Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be Deeper Than Witcher 3

For many fans following E3 2019, there’s no question that Cyberpunk 2077 and Keanu Reeves totally stole the show during Microsoft’s press briefing. There wasn’t much new gameplay shown, but the cinematic trailer did at least hint at the potential consequences for V’s actions. CD Projekt Red has already many times that choice was going to be an important pillar in Cyberpunk 2077, but its true significance to the project is only just now becoming clear. Based on everything the developer has published about the project, it’s probably safe to say that the depth of player choice here is going to outstrip even that of The Witcher 3.

The extended demo from 2018 showed a Cyberpunk 2077 filled with decisions that can affect how missions play out, but from all the coverage the game has been getting, it seem to indicate that player decisions will affect much more than how missions play out. According to CD Projekt RED, even V’s background can heavily affect the options available to the player.

For example, a V that comes from the streets will be better able to relate with gang members or just intimidating their way into places than a V without that background could. Alternatively, former-corpo V can more easily network with Night City’s business elite and gain what would otherwise be restricted information. For comparison, Geralt didn’t have this kind of flexibility; he had to approach every situation from one angle, that of a Witcher.

Cyberpunk 2077 - E3 2019 V Mirror

The defining characteristic of CD Projekt Red RPGs is ambition. This actually explains a lot about what they’re trying to with Cyberpunk 2077 and why they might just be able to pull off the kind of depth implied by the pre-release media seen thus far. CD Projekt Red is actively trying to push the envelope here, so it would actually be more surprising if they didn’t ship a product that managed to do exactly that.

Fans won’t know for certain how deep the game goes until it ships, but there will be a lot of new footage and info coming out in the next several months. CD Projekt RED is showing-off a new section of Night City at E3 as well as a new fifty-minute slice of gameplay to members of the press. They’ll be bringing all of this to future events , so it’ll only be a couple of months before an even clearer picture of Cyberpunk 2077 becomes available. Hopefully it serve to confirm what many of us are already suspecting that this will be CD Projekt RED’s deepest and most involved game yet.
