Modders are Bringing SOCOM to Source Engine

If there were a category called “this is why we love video games” fan created mods would definitely top the charts. Fans are constantly creating glorious looking additions to games we already loved or making horrible games better. Soon we’ll be able to add a remake of SOCOM 2 to that list. For the former and not the latter.

Fans of the series have undergone the process of recreating SOCOM 2 using the source engine. Right now the game is just a mod in CS:GO (Counter Strike: Global Offensive for all you noobs) and in all honesty just looks like third person CS with SOCOM maps. They’ve also only recreated 3 SOCOM maps in Desert Glory, Frost Fire, and Crossroads, but they’ve done so in pretty impressive detail. They also plan to add Vigilance, The ruins, Sujo, Fish Hook, Night Stalker, Blood Lake, Foxhunt, and Blizzard.

It doesn’t look like much right now and that’s because it just isn’t, but the big picture and all that can be created afterwards is what gets us going. The group plans to really get things going when Source 2 Engine is released. Then maps will be finalized leaning, proning, and climbing will be added and third person mode will be added. The kicker though is the plan to include native VR support for devices like the Oculus Rift.

Can you imagine playing SOCOM 2 or even just a CS:GO clone using the Oculus? The best part about this is that it’s not a kickstarter so you don’t have to worry about the hard earned money you donated being used on everything, but development. All you have to do is just sit back and reap the free rewards of the passionate hard work of these fine people.

They’re also posting announcements and too keep anyone interested in the loop. Even if this doesn’t pan out it’s a great project and hopefully we can keep getting talented people to mod our games. After all, the Skyrim mods are what make the game.
