The original iteration of the Oculus Rift has been rapidly showing its age, which is fine for a product never designed for consumers in the first place.  Between the new features of the latest models and the lack of availability of many of the parts needed to make v.1, it's about time for a new version to come along, and as of today reservations are open.

The new Rift, DK2 (developer's kit 2) incorporates the changes that made the Crystal Cove model such a hit when it debuted at the winter CES- the camera for positional tracking, low-persistence OLED display with a resolution of 960 x 1080 per eye, 100 degree field of view, and a high refresh rate that almost kills movement lag and the attendant nausea it could bring to some people.  These improvements don't sound like they'd come cheap but at $350 for the advance order it's not that much more than the prototype's $300 asking price.  With the feature set being a stone's throw away from the final specs planned for the retail model in 2015 (nebulous and unannounced as those specs may be) it may justify the purchase, or maybe knowing there's another model with upgrades coming a year later means it's a better idea to hold off a bit longer.  It's not an easy choice, but no matter which you end up deciding it's exciting to watch a new segment of gaming making its impact on the future of the hobby.
