Yooka-Laylee’s Newest Character has the Worst Name

Playtonic Games has unveiled a new character set to appear in its upcoming Yooka-Laylee, and boy is its name just awful: “Rextro Sixtyfourus.”

Yikes.

Rextro Sixtyfourus is a dinosaur who wears his polygons on his sleeve, a blocky look that gives the appearance of having been ripped straight from Banjo-Kazooie on the N64. Rextro’s creator, Mark Stevenson, who has worked on many Donkey Kong games as well as Kameo, explained to IGN some of the thought that went into the design:

“We decided on using a dinosaur pretty early on as this is a creature that naturally associates with a past era,” says [Mark] Stevenson. “Then I think mostly my inspiration came from work I’d done previously on characters for the Donkey Kong 64 game.”

While Rextro’s name is way too on the nose and cheesy for my own taste, I can’t deny that the little guy is pretty adorable, and it’s interesting to read about how he was designed. You can see Rextro in action and get more insight from Stevenson in IGN’s full article.

Playtonic Games is aiming for an October 2016 release for Yooka-Laylee on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.
