Over the next ten days, Hardcore Gamer will be revealing its Best of 2015 Awards leading up to our Game of the Year. Today we present you with the Best Action Game, Shooter and RPG.
Best Action Game: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has been a long time coming — but even the most diehard fans could never have predicted what an astonishingly well-realized action experience it would end up being. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain retains the hallmarks of this tactical stealth experience, but brings the gameplay into the “next generation” in stunningly good form. Not only is are the controls tight and precise, but the action is far beyond what other gaming contemporaries were able to achieve. Those looking for an absolutely massive game with Hollywood-level polish got exactly what they wanted with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
|Rise of the Tomb Raider||Titan Souls||Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number||Just Cause 3|
Best Shooter: Halo 5: Guardians
The FPS genre has been alive and well this year, with hits like Destiny: The Taken King, Black Ops 3, Splatoon, and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood all pushing the envelope in their own respective ways. What’s interesting about that list is, aside from Black Ops 3, those other franchises are all relatively new. Halo 5 offers players the year’s best shooting experience, hands down. Sure, its story may not be the strongest in the series — and yes we all are aware that Microsoft’s marketing campaign pitting Chief vs. Spartan Locke was not entirely accurate of the narrative being told in the actual game — but its gunplay and multiplayer are at their best with this fifth installment. Halo 5 surmounted the seemingly insurmountable with the most customizable multiplayer suite of any FPS to date, in addition to implementing age-old modes alongside some new ones that, for the most part, panned out quite nicely. If nothing else, Warzone’s blend of MOBA-like ideas with the tried-and-true Halo multiplayer philosophies will change how other developers approach the genre.
|Call of Duty: Black Ops III||Splatoon||Destiny: The Taken King||Wolfenstein: The Old Blood|
Best RPG: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
People talk about how much content games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have, but everyone seems to brush aside how difficult it is to weave an excellent story over the course of a hundred hours. There’s a reason why The Witcher titles function so well as Western RPGs: this is a series that made its claim to fame as a series of fantasy novels. The Witcher 3 combines an outstanding sense of wanderlust with rock-solid mechanics and a narrative that feels as though it could function just as well in novel form, with the result being one of the best open-world games in the history of this medium. An easy choice for the game that you would take with you on a deserted island if you could only choose one title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a masterpiece that should be experienced by anyone with even a passing interest in open-world RPGs.
|Bloodborne||Fallout 4||Pillars of Eternity||Xenoblade Chronicles X|
