Best of 2015 – Day Six: PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC

Over the next ten days, Hardcore Gamer will be revealing its Best of 2015 Awards leading up to our Game of the Year. Today we present you with the Best PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and PC games.

Best PlayStation 4 Game: Bloodborne

While the PlayStation 4 has had a strong lineup this year, as you can tell from our nominees, it has mainly been indie games. That is by no means a bad thing, but it does leave the AAA community a little disappointed with the showing. Fortunately, there’s one game that stands out in the bunch that’s not only incredibly well designed, but targeted towards the most hardcore audience. Bloodborne implements far quicker gameplay mechanics than any of the past Souls games, not to mention having some of the most disgusting, hideous monsters seen in any piece of modern fiction. There will undoubtedly be those who prefer the slower model in From Software’s catalog, but there’s no denying the brilliance that Bloodborne brings . Whether it’s cutting through the various infected or adventuring through the Victorian-era setting, if you own a PlayStation 4 in 2015, you owe it yourself to at least try Bloodborne.

Best Xbox One Game: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is back and better than ever. Crystal Dynamics was able to successfully reboot the long running franchise in 2013, and that set the groundwork for something better. What they have been able to accomplish in Rise of the Tomb Raider is nothing short of outstanding. While it’s not as impactful as the reboot itself, the modifications to combat and the strong focus on extracurricular activities expand upon not only the story, but the overall experience itself. While the story is somewhat formulaic in its approach,  comparable to Indiana Jones plots, it’s the characters and exploration elements that make Rise of the Tomb Raider shine. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however, with elements such as hunting and scavenging being far more vital than ever before. While no dinosaurs, there’s just something about taking down a giant bear that’s oh so satisfying. In the end, Tomb Raiding has never felt this good.

Best Wii U Game: Super Mario Maker

While PlayStation has LittleBigPlanet and Xbox has Project Spark, Nintendo has easily the most recognizable of them all: Super Mario. The iconic video game character not only makes his return to the Wii U, but he does so in one of the best forms possible. While there are those who dislike the idea of player generated content, the community behind Super Mario Maker is enormous, crafting not only some of the most creative levels to ever grace the series, but some of the most challenging that will put hardcore players to the test. The online updates are also coming in faster than any Wii U game to date, hopefully setting precedent for future Nintendo releases. While we still eagerly await what Nintendo has in store for everyone’s favorite Italian plumber, Super Mario Maker should keep us busy for years to come.

Best PC Game: Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity is one of those rare Kickstarter campaigns that not only saw an actual release, but completely obliterated expectations. Obsidian Entertainment’s homage to Isometric RPGs is in full-display in Pillars of Eternity. It’s clear they were inspired by the likes of Baldur’s Gate, but managed to create something with its own identity. Pillars of Eternity is an excellent RPG on its own thanks to deep, engaging, and highly complex combat, fantastic customization options and exceptional graphics. This is all tied together with an intriguingly mysterious plot that ensures you’ll be tied to your PC for hours on end. Not only is Pillars of Eternity a exquisite game, but also the best PC exclusive of 2015.
