In hindsight, calling ourselves “Hardcore Gamer” pigeonholed what we could cover. Many sleepless nights go by with our writers tossing and turning because they can’t write about the latest Farmville update. It’s for that reason and that reason only — and because somebody registered the Casual Gamer domain before we had a chance to — that every month we present to you a quick look at a mobile game that deserves your attention regardless of its place on the gaming spectrum.

This month in Casual Corner we're bringing you Fern Flower, a game created by the duo at Macaque. In Fern Flower, you control a single character and make an ascent up a mystic mountain to collect Fern Flowers that are rumored to bring fortune to whoever finds them.

Fern Flower is loosely inspired by Slavic mythology and that's where it gets its namesake and central point. To collect as many Fern Flowers as you can while you climb. In order to do so, all you'll need to do is click the side of the screen that you want to jump to. The quicker you tap the less time you have between jumps/shorter you jump. The longer you hold the higher you go allowing you to traverse the obstacles that will muck up your path.

The most basic obstacle Fern Flower will throw at you is the gap. As you go up you'll have areas of space where you can't make a jump so alternating your jumping pattern is a must. The mountain's width will also change making you make adjustments. Along with gaps will be snow, wind and more the further you go up.

Scattered throughout as you climb the mountain will be Dragonflies and Fern Flowers to collect. The Dragonflies will increase your overall high score for that climb. Also increasing that is the max height you reach before you fall. The Fern Flowers are the in-game currency that can be used to purchase the other characters or give you a boost at the start. The flowers are few and far between so collecting them when you can is a must.

You play as Doe, the starting character in the game. As you collect Fern Flowers you'll gain the ability to unlock the three other characters in the game named Aurochs, Raven and Fox. Each character, minus Doe, has a special thing they allow during play. For Aurochs, the cost of the boosted jump at the beginning is decreased. Raven reduces the cost of the magnet. Fox converts every thirty Dragonflies into a Fern Flower.

Overall Fern Flower plays really well. The music makes for a chill and relaxing experience allow you to just mellow you and jump around. You fall? Restart and do the climb all over. The simplicity of it all makes it a great game to pull out and play whenever you feel and you never get that frustrated feeling from it after falling.

Those interested can download Fern Flower here on iOS and here on Android.
