In hindsight, calling ourselves “Hardcore Gamer” pigeonholed what we could cover. Many sleepless nights go by with our writers tossing and turning because they can’t write about the latest Farmville update. It’s for that reason and that reason only — and because somebody registered the Casual Gamer domain before we had a chance too — that every month we present to you a quick look at a mobile game that deserves your attention regardless of its place on the gaming spectrum.

Endless Runners are a staple of mobile games and this month we have another one for you in Run Sausage Run by Crazy Labs.

Endless runners have always been about one thing: go hard and fast into the unknown and pray that you can avoid whatever obstacle comes your way next. Pray might be an over-exaggeration, but you're not playing to lose so why not. The obstacles in Run Sausage Run are a great assortment of kitchen products that will do harm to an innocent sausage running around. There are burners, knives, meat tenderizers and more blocking your way from getting a high score.

Mechanically, Run Sausage Run is a simple game. The only mechanic is how fast are you going to run and this is done by either pressing the screen or not pressing it. Pressing the screen leans your sausage backwards as they sprint past the obstacles meant to kill them. Not pressing the screen allows your sausage to saunter through the area without a care in the world. Blending these two is necessary to keep going as you'll need a lot of patience to have a good run. You'll also need to learn the appropriate timings for some of the obstacles.

Along with running through and past everything, there are power-ups scattered throughout. There are four powerups that will make your time during this game a little easier: shrink, shield, freeze and enlarge. Shrink and enlarge are self-explanatory, growing and shrinking your sausage. Shield is essentially an extra life so if you get hit by an obstacle it'll just remove the shield from you. Freeze is great because it will freeze all obstacles for a limited amount of time allowing you to just sprint through without a care in the world.

Along your route, if you aren't seeing powerups you'll likely be seeing coins that will allow you to buy some cosmetics for your sausage. There are five skins that can be bought and they'll cost you quite a few coins and play time to unlock, creating a lot of replayability for those into that. If you aren't into collecting coins, however, you can still unlock a lot of skins by simply finishing off game achievements. Some are as simple as playing three days in a row. Others will require you to die, revive or pass a lot of obstacles total.

For the most part that's it when it comes to Run Sausage Run. Fans of endless runners looking for something a little different should give it a try. Download it here for iOS and here for Android.
