In hindsight, calling ourselves "Hardcore Gamer" pigeonholed what we could cover. Many sleepless nights go by with our writers tossing and turning because they can't write about the latest Farmville update. It's for that reason and that reason only -- and because somebody registered the Casual Gamer domain before we had a chance too -- that every month we present to you a quick look at a mobile game that deserves your attention regardless of its place on the gaming spectrum.

Everybody loves a good autoscroller. They're great at taking up mass amounts of time and challenging enough to make you come back for another run. There are no advanced mechanics to get in the way, it's just you and however fast you can tap or swipe your screen. If you're part of the collective "everybody" and enjoy tapping your screen moreso than swiping then Sky by Ketchapp will be a good time.

The basic point of Sky is to flip your square or "character" throughout the maze presented. Each time it should be different, but you'll pick up on patterns the more you play. The moves at your disposal are a one tap single jump or a double tap double jump. Extremely simple stuff. What makes it difficult at times is choosing which one to use. You'll use these jumps to clear obstacles blocking your path. Running into them or landing on top of them counts as a hit, and one hit and you're done. Obstacles come as one block, two blocks or three blocks aligned together.

To make things difficult, Sky has portals along the routes which will clone more of your characters. The routes can all consist of different obstacles and whenever you tap the screen you control all available blocks. Sometimes one block will be slightly ahead of the others and sometimes you may need to really think about how you're going to plan out your jumps to progress. Your saving grace is that if you lose all of the blocks besides one you should be fine to progress as they generally converge onto one point and you're left with just one. What you lose however are the points you collect along each path and it can seriously mess up your timing making you wipe the level.

Every point along every route has a dot. Each dot corresponds to one point and you can collect new characters by collecting and spending 5,000 points. Characters don't change gameplay, but do change the aesthetics of the level. You can get a dragon character that leaves a trail as you jump throughout the level and other characters with different interactions. Gameplay stays the same though.

What's the point? Well, like any autoscroller you just go as long as you can with the difficulty amping up along the way. Things don't necessarily get faster but more obstacles with less breaks come at you and you control more characters at once. You can get a section where you're controlling four near the beginning of the level and followed by one where you're controlling two. There's no set pattern it's all just random. The longer you go the more points you get and the more characters you can unlock. Once you die you just hit the continue button and you're back to it. It's all very simple.

If this sounds like something you're in to you get download Sky by Ketchapp here on iOS and here for Android. On iOS the game will be called Endless Sky.
