Casual Corner: Tomb of the Mask

In hindsight, calling ourselves “Hardcore Gamer” pigeonholed what we could cover. Many sleepless nights go by with our writers tossing and turning because they can’t write about the latest Farmville update. It’s for that reason and that reason only — and because somebody registered the Casual Gamer domain before we had a chance too — that every month we present to you a quick look at a mobile game that deserves your attention regardless of its place on the gaming spectrum.

In this month’s edition of Casual Corner, we’re bringing you Tomb of the Mask by Playgendary. TotM is for those who enjoy a fast-paced puzzle game that can be picked up anytime.

The main point of TotM is to navigate maze after maze collecting as many dots and stars as you can. As you progress from level to level it’ll get harder and more obstacles will be added. There are spikes in walls, spikes that won’t appear until you touch the wall after a delay, enemies that will drop rocks on you and more. A lot to make you think and trip you up along the way.

TotM works as expected mechanically. You flick your finger in the direction you want your character to go and they’ll extend as far as they can in that direction. The only issue with this movement is that it limits what you can do in some areas making you intentionally have to be a little creative about getting to certain areas. Watch how you flick, as the movement is immediate and if it misinterprets how you want to move, the end result will be disappointing.

As you progress and level up you’ll also unlock masks that will give you perks for either story mode, Arcade mode or both. The other way to earn masks is through a subscription method the game uses, but that’s not necessary. Other than masks you can also upgrade powerups that you can earn in arcade mode and story mode making both slightly easier. For story mode, there’s only one powerup that you’ll use and that’s the shield. The shield blocks you from crashes for thirty seconds. The other item in that menu that you can upgrade for story mode is the score multiplier, but that also works in Arcade.

Arcade mode is TotM’s random endless mode. There, you progress as far as you can while the game has a wave that rapidly approaches you. While you’re advancing you’re still avoiding obstacles and collecting dots, but you also can collect other powerups that will make the progression easier. The best powerup is Freeze and that freezes the level and the wave from approaching allowing you to take your time and collect everything. Next is Magnet and that will help you just move towards the end without going into every knick and cranny for the dots/coins. Lastly, there’s Coin Addict and that will turn all surrounding dots into coins helping you earn some more money.
