We know how it is. You worked hard for your 10:1 KDR, but sometimes, you just want to take five, relax and enjoy a quick game on your phone. Unfortunately, finding good games is anything but quick – most mobile gems end up buried under a mountain of trash. But like we said, we know how it is, so every month we shine a spotlight on a great diversion to get you through the work week.

Are you a fan of dual stick top down shooters? Then this month Xenowerk by Pixelbite is for you.

In Xenowerk you play as the member of the security team and your job is to destroy a ridiculous amount of mutants. At your disposal is a large armory, power suits, and special abilities. Missions generally have about two or three objectives total that aren't taxing at all. You're usually activating something or killing an abomination. You'll complete these objectives easily as your run around the level mowing down enemies. As you kill enemies you'll collect weapon mastery points, and coins. Coins are the game currency and will be how you unlock weapons/armor. You're basic starting items aren't anything special and the prices for better gear at first glance will look ridiculous. After a few levels, however, you'll release you collect coins quite easily. At the end of the first ten missions you should have enough coins to buy a new power suit and a gun that'll leave you overpowered for the next level. This is probably the best feature of Xenowerk. Playing through missions and collecting coins doesn't seem like a fruitless task. You're not leaving a level with a measly 20 coins. You can actually collect about 1,000 coins a mission which makes buying items a cinch.

Mechanically Xenowerk is a really simple game. It's a traditional dual stick shooter and doesn't try to do anything fancy. If you use gamepads it also supports those. Above the right stick is your power up section which initially only offer a healing option and a speed boost. As you unlock better suits though you get more options like a damage boost and Ring of Frost. These are will just act as more options to destroy the hordes of monsters that'll come your way, but initially won't be necessary. Also, Pixelbite know that you can grind missions and buy the most expensive suit quickly. So to counter that you'll need to play more levels and unlock stars or "biohazard marks" to unlock them. Each level offers three and you get them through killing monsters, doing objectives, and having a high score.

Graphically Xenowerk is a pretty impressive looking game. There was a lot of work done to bring each level, items, and enemies to life. While levels can have a similar and stale look to them the detail in each item and to the stage in general is apparent. Enemies all look good and different and when they die you get a nice showering of green goo fantastically done.

With 50 levels across three stages Xenowerk offers a lot for the low low price of free. As you play and upgrade you'll become stronger and only feel more awesome mowing down hordes of mutants. Goo flying every which way and explosions going off in the background make Xenowerk an awesome title. You can download it here for iOS and here for Android.
