There’s only one thing better than playing games and that’s collecting every piece of merchandise tied to them. There was nothing like flipping through your favorite gaming magazine and seeing a profile of a limited edition collectible or discovering a piece of memorabilia from a beloved game in an overlooked corner of a shop and it’s a feeling we strive to replicate every month as we look through our own collector’s cabinet and dig out items new and old to show the world.

Good games stand the test of time which is evidenced by the fact that so many titles are brought back as HD versions. GrimGrimoire is just one example. Originally released for the PS2 in 2007, it has continued to delight gamers due to its gorgeous artwork and enjoyable RTS gameplay. GrimGrimoire Once More is now available on PS4, PS5 and Switch so that both existing fans as well as newcomers will be able to enjoy the game on modern platforms.

NIS America wanted to treat fans who were ecstatic about the newer version by offering up a special edition. The GrimGrimoire OnceMore Limited Edition includes a whole host of goodies whichever platform you pick it up for. Included is a copy of the game, an artbook, soundtrack, cloth poster, acrylic display, keychain set and art cards all housed within a collectible box. This is both a mix of standard types of pack-ins as well as more unique ones such as opting for a cloth poster versus paper.

The hardcover artbook is titled “GrimGrimoire OnceMore Witches & Wonders Art Book.” There are 35 pages in total featuring character bios, illustrations and more. One thing that’s unusual about the book is it features illustrations from the art cards that are also included in the box. Not sure why this was done, as the pages could have been used for other art not otherwise available in the Limited Edition or even concept art or interviews. On the plus side, all the pages feature bright, glossy art and it’s worth a look through. Just don’t flip through it before beating the game if you want to avoid all possible spoilers.

Next up is the soundtrack. This comes as a two disc soundtrack in a sealed jewel case. It’s a nice case with full front and back artwork. The only downside to jewel cases is that they have a penchant to crack. As is the case with mine, which was cracked on the back despite how snugly packed everything is within the collector’s box. There are 25 tracks in total across the two discs available for your listening pleasure. GrimGrimoire’s soundtrack has always been a highlight so the inclusion of some CDs was a must.

The art cards are described as “Mystical Portraits” and there are five in total. Each is printed on glossy cardstock and are similar in size to a postcard. Then there’s the acrylic display which is of a much higher quality than you’ll find in most other limited editions. It’s a very thick piece of acrylic and comes with metal pieces you use to serve as a base for the acrylic art. The four “Portable Spells” keychains are also excellent - printed on surprisingly weighty metal. The cloth poster, titled “Magical Mayhem” is also lovely both in the illustration and its 17” by 24” size.

Finally there’s the collector’s box itself. It features two distinct, and gorgeous, designs on the front and back. The sides and top feature spell designs as well as the logo with a spot gloss effect on them. It’s a sturdy cardboard box, and everything is packed smartly, with just a little wiggle room. Unfortunately it’s clear that sometimes the jewel case might be damaged during shipping. Aside from that, it doesn’t seem like there’s much opportunity for anything else in the box to be damaged. Even the keychains have a cardboard insert between them seemingly to prevent them from scratching each other.

The GrimGrimoire OnceMore Limited Edition is all about quality. Even when it includes things that are common to the limited edition world, it enhances them. The items that best highlight this sentiment are the keychains and acrylic artwork. It would have been fantastic to see an even larger artbook, as Vanillaware are known for their jaw-dropping designs. But for the price, it’s totally fair. The edition sells for $89.99 and as of this writing is still available on the NIS Online Store for PS4, PS5 and Switch. That won’t last long, however, as each edition stands at just 11%-25% remaining availability at the time of writing.
