Amazon, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions today announced that a God of War TV series is a go at the streaming giant.

Kratos will soon leap off the gaming console and onto TV thanks to Amazon Prime Video. The streaming giant today announced that it's moving forward with a TV series based on the God of War franchise. Wheel of Time's Rafe Judkins serves as showrunner with The Expanse writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby writing and executive producing. No casting announcements were made.

The God of War TV series will skip Kratos' beginnings in Greece and pick up in the Norse realm of Midgard. Essentially, the TV series will be an adaptation of God of War 2018. It is unknown if the events of the six Greek-based God of War games will be depicted in the show.

“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and [game developer] Santa Monica Studio.”

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” said Sony Pictures TV president Katherine Pope. “Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”

“God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way, said PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash”

The God of War TV series is the latest high-profile move by Sony and PlayStation in the TV world. They are currently working with HBO on The Last of Us (premieres January 15), Peacock on Twisted Metal, and Netflix on Horizon. We'll just have to wait and see how these adaptations fare when compared to the games.

The latest entry in the God of War franchise, God of War Ragnarok, is available now on PS5 and PS4.
