Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard confirmed that the developer will continue to pursue single player games despite dipping its toes into the multiplayer arena.

Almost every publisher and developer has run towards multiplayer and the games-as-a-service model. Franchises that were originally single player have found themselves at the mercy of this new business model. Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Halo, Command & Conquer, and so many others have gone the service route, but not Bethesda Game Studios. The company had managed to not give into industry-wide pressure, but fans fear that may be about to change.

At E3 2018, Bethesda Game Studios revealed Fallout 76, which is not a single player game. Instead, it'll be a shared-world survival game that may incorporate elements of a 'live service.' Obviously, this has fans worried that future games from the studio will follow the same pattern. However, Howard says players have nothing to fear.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Howard revealed that the company has no intention of departing from the studio's signature single player experiences.

"It doesn't mark the future. Corporately we've done a mix; people forget sometimes. Elder Scrolls online is one of the biggest online games in the world, we have Fallout Shelter which we keep updating, and Elder Scrolls: Legends.

"Anyone who has ever said 'this is the future and this part of gaming is dead' has been proven wrong every single time. We like to try it all. For a long time we wanted to try a multiplayer game and we had this idea. We shouldn't be afraid. We should try it."

While Fallout 76 focuses on a multiplayer, live service business mode, the company is currently working on two single player games, Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI. Howard confirmed at E3 2018 that both games are in development, but we won't see them for a while. In the meantime, the studio has a batch of games-as-a-service mobile titles like Fallout Shelter and The Elder Scrolls: Legends as well as major releases like Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 is out November 14 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
