Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one the last holdout in the franchise, is now backwards compatible on Xbox One.

Xbox's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb made the announcement today via Twitter. The blockbuster 2009 game that would go on to sell over 22 million copies worldwide can now be played on your Xbox One console. To commemorate the arrival, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now on sale for $14.99 on the Xbox store.

With Modern Warfare 2 now backwards compatible, every Call of Duty game on Xbox 360 is now backwards compatible on Xbox One. If you already own the game on Xbox 360, pop it into the disc drive and get playing.

The timing of this announcement calls into question whether the rumored remaster will still see a release. Earlier this year, numerous rumors began pouring out that Activision intended to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. However, reports became confusing concerning who would develop it and whether or not it would contain the multiplayer component. No new information concerning a remaster has surfaced since last spring.
