Activision holds onto the best-selling crown for another year thanks to impressive numbers for Call of Duty: WWII.

2017 was a banner year for Activision thanks to the successful launches of Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2. While not without their controversies, both games managed to become the first and second best-selling console games in North America, based on revenue. Call of Duty: WWII took the top spot, grossing over $1 billion in sell-through since its November 3 launch. This win gives the Call of Duty franchise its ninth consecutive year as the top-selling franchise, based on revenue. Destiny 2, which has been hit with numerous controversies recently, came in second place

“Call of Duty: WWII is the #1 top grossing console game of the year in North America, and Destiny 2 is #2,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “That means Call of Duty has been the #1 top grossing console gaming franchise in North America for a staggering nine years in a row, and worldwide eight out of the last nine years. Thank you to our players for your incredible passion and engagement. And thank you to our talented, committed teams all across the globe that make incredible results like this happen.”

Activision also released Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on PS4, a fully remastered collection of the three Crash Bandicoot PlayStation games. The remaster has gone over so well that it managed to become the best-selling remastered collection in PS4 history.

With 2017 coming to a close, players can look forward to more offerings from Activision in 2018. The next Call of Duty title will be developed by Treyarch, and a major expansion for Destiny 2 will also launch.
