It's been a few months plus a year since Catacomb Kids hit its Kickstarter goal, and in that time a few alpha updates have been released to its backers.  It's been a great ride so far and soon it will be open to everyone as Catacomb Kids lands on Early Access.  February 20 is the release date, so soon everyone will have a chance to be stabbed, bitten crushed, frozen, poisoned, spiked, impaled, and eviscerated to a bloody pulp in this brutal roguelike side-scrolling dungeon crawler.

Catacomb Kids is not an easy game, and will happily kill you dead in the first five seconds if you do something dumb like walk over a pressure point that drops a weight onto your skull.  It's not meant to be a pure side-scrolling combat game, though, and you're meant to tread carefully and use the environment against the enemies every bit as much as your weapons.  Got a bunch of wights in a trapped room?  Toss an empty potion bottle in there to wake 'em up and see how many get squished.  Alternately there might not be any weights but maybe there's a torch on a stand you can knock over, or take a more direct route with a chain lightning spell.  Just because there's you and a bunch of enemies doesn't mean thumping them is the only solution, and Catacomb Kids is more than happy to load on the alternatives.

Each character class has its own abilities to exploit, and you can do that in a number of different ways depending on how you level up.  The first of a series of videos went up today showing off the possibilities, starting with the Strength stat but with more to follow.  It's fun to see someone who knows the game exploit its mechanics, so give it a look and see if a little brutal roguelike dungeon platforming catches your fancy.
