Cloud Saves for Nintendo Switch Online Will Remain After Subscription Expires

Of the many gripes and criticisms that Nintendo have received for their first venture into paid online with the recently-released Nintendo Switch Online service, the issue of Cloud Saves has been top of many people’s concerns. Namely the fact that upon a user’s subscription expiring, all cloud saves — according to Nintendo’s very own FAQ page — stored for that account would be inaccessible, with no way of the user to retrieve them should they fail to renew their subscription while it remained active.

Fortunately Nintendo, it would seem, have seen sense on at least one aspect to Cloud Saves and have today confirmed that they will no longer be deleted straight-away. Instead, users have up to roughly six months to renew their subscription upon expiry. Only after this period will a user’s save files be erased, giving people a more decent window of opportunity should they decide they want to keep using the service.

“If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, users won’t be able to access their Save Data Cloud backups.” A spokesperson from Nintendo explained in a statement issued to IGN. “However, Nintendo will allow users who re-subscribe within 180 days to access their previous Save Data Cloud backups.”
