‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes caught the attention of many people online after he competed at Ring of Honor’s Final Battle wearing an awesome Metal Gear Solid-inspired outfit.

The former WWE superstar, who is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, was paying homage to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s main character, Venom Snake.

The 33-year-old American-born wrestler was wearing camouflage trousers, a bandana, a Big Boss-esque eyepatch and Venom Snake’s red bionic arm.

Brandi Rhodes, who is Cody’s wife, accompanied him to the ring wearing her own MGS-themed outfit.

While Rhodes based his attire on The Phantom Pain, the 35-year-old former Impact Wrestling star wore a white jumpsuit reminiscent to the one that The Boss would wear in Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

The New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) superstar caught the eye of the Metal Gear Solid franchise creator, who liked Rhodes’ tweet on his Japanese Twitter account.

Rhodes took on Jay Lethal at Ring of Honor’s pay-per-view for the ROH World Championship, but he ultimately failed to beat his opponent in the match.

It would seem that it was Rhodes’ final appearance with the wrestling company, following on from a tweet that he posted.

“Thank you to all the fans,” he wrote. “Thank you to a wonderfully talented locker room. Thank you to an outstanding crew/production [from] top to bottom.

“Thank you, Joe Koff [and] Greg Gilleland. Thank you, ROH, I needed ‘shelter from the storm’ [and] you gave me a home the past two years. Beautiful experience.”

For a fun bit of trivia, the NJPW star revealed that the death of Sniper Wolf in MGS1 was his favorite moment in the series after he responded to a Twitter user’s question.

It’s not uncommon for wrestlers all around the world to wear outfits referencing popular culture.

In August, the three members of The New Day -- Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E -- competed at WWE SummerSlam wearing Sonic the Hedgehog-inspired in-ring attires.
