We haven’t heard much of Dead Island 2 in the past year; Deep Silver’s open-World zombie title has fallen rather silent as of late and with the project having seen its fair share of development hell in the past — already switching studios following original developer Yeger’s declaration of bankruptcy — is it any wonder that many people have naturally assumed the game’s been canned entirely? Well in a statement issued to Eurogamer today, Deep Silver — the publisher of the original Dead Island — claim this isn’t the case and that the sequel remains in active development.
“Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver’s most successful IP.” The publisher explained. “When we are ready to share more information, we will.” You may recall Sumo Digital are the studio responsible for, among many games, this year’s rather enjoyable 3D platformer Snake Pass. Dead Island 2 was originally unveiled at E3 2013 with a subsequent non-gameplay trailer released the following year and had previously been scheduled for a Spring 2015 release , but outside of even the briefest of gameplay demonstrations, very little is known about the actual sequel. We’ll have to see if Deep Silver intend to show off (or even reconfirm) the game’s existence at this year’s own E3 next month.
