Santa Monica Studio’s God of War has smashed its way past ten million copies sold worldwide, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced.

SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the news in a presentation for the company’s Investor Relations Day 2019, highlighting the strength in sales for its first-party franchises.

According to Sony, Santa Monica’s latest entry in the God of War franchise has put it in the same bracket as Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and The Last of Us Remastered when it comes to breaking past the ten-million mark in sales.

The critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive, which was released in 2018, sold over three million units during its first three days on the market.

Following on from a successful launch week, the action-adventure title would break past five million in sales in its first month.

God of War shifted the franchise away from Greek mythology to Norse mythology, with players once again taking on the role of series protagonist Kratos.

As the Ghost of Sparta, players embark on a story that sees him accompanied by his son, Atreus, as they attempt to fulfill the dying wish of his wife.

Hardcore Gamer’s review praised God of War for keeping “many similarities to its predecessors,” but also ensuring that the “gameplay feels refreshing thanks to the inclusion of Atreus, the Leviathan Axe and the integration of RPG mechanics.”
